In today’s blog our principal electrician Brian Parslow (MRE Electrical Group Director) outlines a few important tips for keeping your system working efficiently.
- Dust and dirt are the main problems for keeping solar power systems operating at peak efficiency. Even the slightest film of dust, dirt or bird droppings blocks the sunlight and reduces the amount of power generated. MRE Electrical Group recommends cleaning all solar panels annually or more regularly where needed.
- Gentle care is required when cleaning solar panels. Use water, a mild soap and a very soft brush. Avoid harsh chemicals and pressure washers that may damage the panels.
- Annual inspections of the solar power system and its components by a qualified and experienced electrician will ensure the panels and inverter continue to operate at peak efficiency.
- On a slightly different yet related topic, solar hot water systems also require ongoing maintenance to maintain peak hot water generation. In addition to maintaining the electrical system, scheduled checks by a qualified plumber will ensure the systems integration with your home water infrastructure remains operational. Solar hot water systems on homes located in areas subject to frost and/or snow need to be checked to prevent pipes bursting in the winter months.
The ongoing maintenance of your solar power system is crucial to keeping the system at peak operation. After all it means money in your pocket!
