To that end, the phone book and local newspapers are full of advertisements from home handymen offering services from lawn mowing to carpentry, painting and a range of other ‘trade’ type functions. Their rates are often cheaper than qualified tradespeople, but there are a number risks associated with doing business that way.
For the moment, we’ll focus our discussions on electrical work. Legislation across Australia provides that all electrical wiring and other specialist electrical work must be carried out by a licenced electrician. There are no exceptions to these key requirements. Electricians are trained to safely undertake all your electrical work and there are real dangers when unqualified people do the work instead. It is illegal and unsafe. Electricians in Queensland must complete an apprenticeship together with appropriate training (Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician) to be eligible for an electrical work licence. They must also hold appropriate insurance to protect the consumer.
Licencing laws also apply to Plumbers and Gasfitters in Queensland, and handymen are not permitted to undertake that type of work without the appropriate qualifications, licence and insurance.
Unlicenced handymen have not completed any qualifications, training or passed all the regulatory requirements to ensure they are a safe operator. It just isn’t worth the risk.
